A downloadable game for Windows

Automania was one of the first Spectrum remakes I created for PC, and much like "The Hunch", it originally used a rather questionable graphic style I’m no longer happy with. So I rebuilt the whole thing from scratch. The new version adds full controller support, lets you switch between full‑colour and classic Spectrum palettes, and includes optional CRT‑style scanlines. Decorative borders — also optional — can fill the widescreen area, and you can now play in either full‑screen or windowed mode. As with my original remake, there’s also an added bonus level tucked in at the end.

Guide Wally through a cluttered garage full of wobbling gangplanks, bouncing tyres, and precariously stacked junk. Your job is simple — fetch six parts for each car, take them to the workshop, and assemble the vehicles without falling off anything, dropping anything, or being knocked over by anything. Build the full fleet and there's a possibility you may even get paid!

Nice conversion! However, we find the collision detection a bit too strict. Our German-language review can be found at 04:34:41. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Nice one, but collision detection with item like BP is TOO sctrict! Unlike the original. I can finish a couple of levels in original with first go, but here I keeps dying on first level when I'm trying to jump over BP and especially back (

Those static hazards are 16x16 pixels. The collision check is only an 8x8 box bottom centre of the item.

Yes, but in the original you need to go exactly to the middle of the sprite to fall. That's why there's such a noticeable difference.

Sorry I don't know what you mean. In my version there's a couple of pixels leniency either side of the centre of the wally sprite before you fall.... but I don't get what this has to do with the static sprites

Here's the comparison between two games: original Automania is above, Automania Refurbished is below. In both cases, Wally's next step will lead to his death. Note that in the top version, Wally has passed exactly half of the BP canister, while in the bottom version, he's passed at most a third. Clearly, in the original game, Wally dies when he passes half the hazard, while in your version, it's about 1/3. This makes the collision detection feel much stricter.

Played this a lot on C64 back then :)

Great remake, thank you very much!

I have a request for the extra picky position required to climb/descend ladders, a lot of deaths here due Wally attempting to 'grab' it invane.

It would be possible a bit wide grab area?

Apart this, truly congrats

If you just keep the Up button pressed as you walk past the ladder (ie press left or right and up at the same time) he will automatically grab it and go up.
